Making Time To Exercise

I get a lot of people asking me how do I find time to workout? Well, first I address the question before addressing the answer. You see, I don’t find time to workout – I make time to workout.

If everyone, especially working parents, could just “find time to workout” then I would hope everyone would. But it’s not that simple. You see, you need to make time to workout or it won’t happen. Everyone and their mother, as a matter of fact, especially mothers, need to make time to workout because there’s no way they’ll find time to do so.

Today, I am a working dad who has the responsibility of taking my kids to the sitter’s before going into work every Monday-Friday. I work about 8-10 hours a day and am stuck in traffic anywhere from 2-3 hours a day. So, I leave my house around 7am and get home around 7pm. When I get home it’s time for supper with the family, kid-bath time, bottle time, and then bedtime which normally happens around 10 pm for my crew.

So, when do I make time to workout?

First thing in the morning…while my kids, and the rest of the Eastern-Standard time zone really, are pretty much asleep.

I wake up around 3-3:30 am and am working out from 4:30-6:30 am at least 5 days a week. I normally workout around 7 am on Saturdays just to switch it up and because I normally don’t clock in on Saturdays.

So, I workout first thing in the morning nowadays because my life demands it, but, if you ask me,

THE MORNING IS THE BEST TIME TO WORKOUT PERIOD!!!

I really do think this is a universal rule that could apply to anyone. You see, even when I was a single teenager with barely any responsibility the morning was a better time to workout than any other.

Why?

Well, it’s simple really, if you workout first thing in the morning LIFE CAN’T GET IN YOUR WAY! And by life I mean anything really. Traffic, a sick baby, overtime at work, lunch not settling well, and the list goes on and on. The thing is that if you’re working out before the rest of the world starts their day, there will be that many less obstacles in your way, making it easier to make time to workout.

But, on top of having less possible situations stopping you from working out, if you workout first thing in the morning you’ll get the added benefit of the workout high – a high that’s 10 times more powerful than any cup of Joe!

Yeah, you’ll have to skip a few morning cartoons, but here’s one of my favorites to make up for it.
