Why P90X + LeanGains : The Transformation
Over the last year I have been asked the same four questions by a lot of people.
***UPATE – JULY 3rd 2015 – 3 YEARS LATER RESULTS AND UPDATE HERE***
THE 4 QUESTIONS:
-
“Did you take the P90X pictures? You know, the ones in front of the mirror like you see in the infomercials?”
Answer – Yes…I am ashamed to say…but Tony told me to do it…and I had committed to doing what he said for the 90 days…and you can see the “transformation” at the end of this post…
or here if you can’t wait!
-
“I mean, does P90X actually work?”
Answer – Well…I don’t think I would have been motivated to create a blog devoted to P90X if it didn’t “work” and, more importantly, change my life.
-
“I mean, does LeanGains really work?”
Answer – same as above.
-
“Are you still working out and following the LeanGains diet?”
Answer – Well, first and foremost, the fourth question has a few issues we must address before we continue with this post. First of all, LeanGains, if used to maintain current weight, IS NOT a diet but a way of life. Secondly, the question should not be “if” I am still working out but “what” workouts am I currently doing.
You see, this site is about changing one’s lifestyle for the rest of your life – not one’s waistline for the next three months.
Therefore, it is of extreme importance to note that…
TO CHANGE ONE’S LIFESTYLE YOU CANNOT FOLLOW A DIET OR JUST DO A WORKOUT PROGRAM ONCE.
The point isn’t to get in shape for the summer but to GET IN SHAPE FOR LIFE!
And this is exactly what Tony Horton’s P90 Programs and the LeanGains eating styles are all about – changing one’s lifestyle.
You see, the way I follow LeanGains and the P90X’s is A WAY OF APPROACHING LIFE – NOT DIETING!
Yes, everyone needs to find the lifestyle that fits their goals and the life they want to live.
For me it’s P90X + LeanGains and below are a few reasons why.
WHY LEANGAINS?
-
No calorie counting…if you’re trying to maintain your current weight!
I don’t like calorie counting – THAT IS DIETING AND LEANGAINS IS NOT ABOUT THAT…as long as you want to maintain your current weight of course. Please note that if you are trying to gain or cut weight you will need to calorie count if you’d like to make sure you see results…more on this at a later post.
-
I love to eat…and I eat a lot when I do eat
-
I love cereal and whole milk
-
I love dessert
-
LEANGAINS IS A TIME & MONEY SAVER!
Seriously, this is a huge benefit to the LeanGains/IF eating style. You save time because you don’t have to pack a thousand snacks or small meals everyday. You are most likely going to eat one meal at work and another at home – NO WASTING TIME PACKING SNACKS FOR AN EVERY 3 HOUR MARATHON OF EATING. LeanGains not only saves prep time at home but also saves time and money at the grocery store because you’re not shopping for a thousand expensive snacks and diet-based recipes…you’re getting what you normally eat so there is no sticker shock when checking out at the grocery store!
WHY P90?
Both programs, P90X and P90X2, have enough variety to keep anyone entertained and the body constantly guessing, adapting, and developing.
To be perfectly frank, at first I thought P90X wasn’t for me because I hated working out at home. But, when my work schedule changed, I found myself with 30 minutes less a day to workout.
So, I started to think about ways to save 30 minutes from every workout.
- I could stop my runs…but that wasn’t an option because I wanted to lose 75 lbs.
- I could cut my weight lifting short…not an option due to the fact that muscle building = fat burning.
- I could cut my Ab routine…but that would save only about 16 minutes…and lets face it, no one wants to cut out Abs.
- I could cut my after-workout shower and just go straight to work rocking the workout funk – nope!
So, what could I do…? I thought of everything…or did I?
One morning, as I was driving to the gym, I found myself stuck at a traffic light. And it came to me!
I could cut the gym!
Follow me now. So, getting ready and coming to/from the gym was easily a 25-30 minute round trip. Yeah, the gym was only a few miles from my house but you never know when you’re going to hit all the red lights or when a machine at the gym you want to use will be occupied – two issues working out at home completely resolved.
-
Time Saver
You save at least 25 minutes a day (perfect amount of time for a good run) by not having to go to and from the gym.
-
$ Money Saver $
P90X ; $130 for P90X + $300 for the equipment = $430 ONE-TIME FEE
As opposed to a gym membership
Gym ; $40/month x 12 months = $480/year
-
Resistance Exercise
The P90X programs are tailored for people who are used to resistance exercises – which I was.
-
LIFTING WEIGHTS IS ONE OF THE BEST FAT BURNING EXERCISES PERIOD!
So I changed my lifestyle and completely transformed my body.
But how did the “transformation” actually look?
Well, though I have shown my final results, I have yet to show the incremental results…or what the P90X people like to call the “transformation”.
So, below is the “transformation” with dates and programs noted so you can see how P90X, P90X + LeanGains, and P90X2 incrementally changed my body composition and body type over a 180 day period….AND YES! I KNOW THE PHOTOS’ COLOR, TEMP, FOCUS, ETC. ARE OFF BUT I LEFT THEM AS SHOT AS TO NOT RAISE SUSPICIONS.

Did you do plyo, kenpo and yoga days as well or just the lifting days?

Yeap – I did the full program. I actually got sick a few times and either pushed through the workouts sick or did two workouts the next day. I just really wanted to put P90X to the test so I made sure to complete the program in 90 days.

I do take BCAA – about 2 servings a day during my fasted state…though, because I work out right after waking up I do not start drinking my BCAA until after the workouts. (FYI – I normally fast from 9 PM to 3 PM the next day and workout in the mornings from 4:30 AM – 6:30 AM…so I do not start actually consuming BCAA until about 7:30 AM). Hope this makes sense.

Makes sense.
9:30PM Start fast
4:30AM Workout
7:30AM BCAA
3:00PM Break fast
So then you arent taking any BCAA prior to lifting then? Only after between 6:30AM and 3:00PM?

That is correct.

Haha this just makes everything confusing.
After seeing your tremendous results it kind of goes against what Martin says for Lean Gains. He said that taking BCAA prior to working out is crucial to prevent muscle loss. And also says doing any sort of high intensity cardio (kenpo, plyo) wouldnt beneficial to gaining muscle. Thats why I have seen people doing P90x with only the lifting days.
Now its just which route do I go with. Thanks for all the help

Yeah…I was worried about that too when I first started the LeanGains approach. So, to gain some mass back I actually did cut back on running but I did not completely remove the cardio workouts nor completely remove my runs from my regiment.
While trying to gain weight, I went from running 4-6 days a week to running about 2 days a week. But I realized I like to eat a good bit of “junk” calories and to keep the 7-9% body fat I personally have to run about 3-4 days a week.
As far as muscle loss…I really don’t think the science is there to show muscle loss from an 18 hour fast…especially if you maintain a weight lifting regimen.
I actually think that the biggest impact to my regimen was taking Martin’s 6-8 appraoch to weight lifting (i.e., if you can max out at 8 reps up the weight until your maxing out at 4 – 6 reps).
When I dropped the high rep count and focused on heavier weight I really started to see mass gains.
Hope this helps.
