THE DECISION – WHY I FINALLY BECAME A BEACHBODY COACH
HELPING OTHERS ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS
Ever since completing my first round of P90X, almost 2 years ago, I felt motivated to finally start doing what I loved – motivating and helping others. After truly coming to terms with what I had just accomplished, losing 1/3 of myself in a year’s time, I felt 110% motivated to start helping others live a more healthy, productive, and fulfilling life…something I had gotten a fix for back in the 7th grade.
MY MOM CHANGED MY LIFE
As you all may or may not already know, I am the fat twin – a fact my friends and family never let me forget…that was until the 7th grade…until the day I took matters into my own hands.
One not-so-special day during my 7th-grade summer break my mom asked me to go on a walk with her. I used to love hanging out with my mom, and still do (though I don’t really let her know it as often as I used to) so I agreed. That day we walked about 3 miles…not that long…but just long enough to change the rest of my life.
On that walk my Mom and I talked about a lot of things, but one topic stuck with me for the rest of my life, one topic would actually change me forever – weight loss and maintenance.
You see, like me, my mom is a fatty if not working out and watching what she eats, but also like me, my mom is pretty anal about sticking to a goal (especially when that goal is weight loss and/or maintenance). So, that day I asked her, “Mommmm,” (I don’t know why but I seem to elongate the final “M” in Mom) “I am sick of being known as the fat twin. How can a lose weight?”
Her answer was quick, direct, and 100% accurate, “That’s easy, eat less and workout more. You simply have to use more calories than you eat.”
So, that summer my Mom created her own custom meal plan for me and told me to keep walking with her…and I did.
My mom became my first trainer and dietitian and I lost over 30 pounds in 2 months.
MY FIRST FITNESS ADVICE
When school came back in session no one could really call me the fat twin anymore. Of course everyone noticed the change and a lot of people complimented me, but the best compliment came in the form of a question.
One day my 7th grade teacher abruptly pulled me out of my 8th Grade class. At first I thought she had caught me doing something wrong in the halls, or maybe I was still in trouble for having unintentionally responded “What the hell…?” to her the previous year…? Whatever it was, all I knew was that I was in some deep trouble if she had pulled me out of another teacher’s class in the very first week of school.
So, there I was, a bit panicked, the tension at it’s pinnacle, when all of a sudden my 7th grade teacher’s stern face broke into a genuine smile followed by a wave of relief and curiosity – “What is she up to?” I thought to myself.
“So, Roly, how did you do it?”
“Do what, Mrs. J?”
“How did you lose all that weight?”
“Oh…haha…yeah thanks.”
“No, I am not complimenting you, I am asking you – seriously, how did you lose all that weight so fast?”
“Oh…you’re serious…” and so I went on to tell her my weekly meals, my specific exercise routine, and what foods I completely eliminated to help lose weight. Well, she took the advice and in two months had lost 15 pounds…and I had officially gotten the itch!
THINGS CAN CHANGE…BUT SO CAN YOU
Over the next 10 years I continued being a health and fitness nut. I read every magazine, book, or article on the subject. I tried every fad diet and every fad workout until the day I realized they were all variations of the same two rules;
1. Weight loss is all about eating less calories than you use and
2. Muscle Mass is all about resistance training
With these two rules I spent the next 10 years of my life in, what I thought at the time, was the best shape of my life…
…BUT that all changed a few months after getting married.
Yeah, when I was 13 I lost 30 pounds in two months BUT when I was 22 I gained 30 pounds in two months…and before I knew it, there was no denying who the fat twin was again. The rest of the story is, as they say, history (unless you have yet to hear it, then it’s as they say, unknown to you, and if that’s the case please read the story here).
Nonetheless, after gaining a total of 80 pounds in 2 years, I found myself a 240-pound-recently-graduated-out-of-work-due-to-the-economy-brand-new dad with two bum knees and a bum shoulder who had to stopped working out for over a year due to injuries.
So, if my weight wasn’t getting me a bit depressed, life sure as hell wasn’t helping.
Lucky for me, I don’t seem to stay depressed for long and if there was one thing I knew I could control it was my own body…or could I?
TAKING CONTROL OF CHANGE
So, in hopes of regaining some sort of control of my life, one day I decided to stop feeling sorry for myself and start doing what I knew could change – my state of mind as well as my physical well-being.
I finally started working out again…and just like that – poof! I lost 40 pounds in 2 months!
Awesome right?! NOPE!
As quick as I lost the 40 pounds is as quick as I hit a year-long-weight-loss plateau!
P90X AND X-GAINS
“So, what now?” I thought to myself. “I have two full-time jobs, I lost 40 pounds, I am working out regularly, and eating “right” but I still can’t lose the weight…?”
After months of being stuck 40 pounds away from my goal I started thinking I’d have to deal with being 40 pounds heavier than I’d like to be…but 40 pounds lighter than I was…for the rest of my life.
But then, one fateful day a dear friend of mine, like an angel sent from God, or a simple coincidence (geez…lets not get all crazy about this), casually stated that he had just bought and started P90X.
“Really,” I responded. “I have seen those infomercials on TV and that programs gotta’ work. I mean I’ve been working out for almost 20 years and that guy is doing all the right moves…maybe I’ll give it a try…”
…And a week later, there I was canceling my gym membership, ordering P90X, and getting all the necessary equipment.
Then, 90 days later I was, for the first time in my life, in the best shape of my life!
IT’S HARDER TO BELIEVE THAN TO DO
At first I couldn’t believe it. I truly thought it was too good to be true. I thought my body would rebel and that my weight would return…but it didn’t!
So, a few weeks after finishing my first round of P90X I looked into being a Beachbody Coach. I was so thrilled with the results, and believed so much in the program, that I wanted to help spread the word. I was a simple two clicks away from becoming an official Beachbody Coach when I thought to myself, “wait a minute, if I become a coach people might think I am trying to sell them something…and that’s not what I want to convey…not at all…they’ll just disregard my advice as sales talk…” So, I didn’t do it.
That night I couldn’t sleep. I thought about how being a Beachbody Coach might take away from my authenticity and/or honesty. I thought, and made the decision, that being a Beachbody Coach would take away from validating my true motive – the motive of helping others live a healthy more productive lifestyle.
So, I started X-Gains instead.
I started X-Gains nearly 2 years ago and in this short time I’ve helped countless readers achieve their own personal fitness and lifestyle goals. Be it via a Beachbody product or custom X-Gains workouts and/or meal plans, X-Gains has helped enough people over the last two years that I now feel self-validation no matter what others may think. I created, and run X-Gains completely for free because I genuinely love helping people reach their goals and more importantly change their lives…
…But I’ve recently learned that not being a Beachbody Coach is actually doing my readers more harm than good!
How come?
Well, over the last few months alone I have had about 10 readers that I am currently helping (“coaching” if you well), tell me that their Beachbody Coach is doing absolutely nothing for them. Much like my original Beachbody Coach, who never even checked in on me once, my readers are getting absolutely no guidance as they embark on the daunting task of changing their lifestyle….
…and, every single time I hear this I get extremely annoyed on a number of levels…but specifically because BAD BEACHBODY COACHES ARE THIEVES!!!!
INJUSTICE? I THINK NOT MY FRIENDS!
For starters, bad coaches do nothing but stain the Beachbody brand while getting a commission for each product their clients buy…in essence bad coaches are stealing our money and Beachbody’s money.
Yeah, Beachbody is a huge company that could probably afford to lose a few bucks, but if you know anything about Beachbody you know they believe in their brand, products, and purpose and a bad coach is doing nothing to help achieve that purpose of helping create a healthier planet.
Instead a Bad Beachbody Coach is doing everything to spur on negative attitudes towards exercise, fitness, and an overall healthier lifestyle…something that, in my opinion, is unforgivable.
SO, WHY I BECOME A BEACHBODY COACH
So, due to the fact that I now feel personally validated to share my honest opinion no matter who I may be affiliated with, and because I see an injustice occurring in something I truly believe in, I have decided to become an Official Beachbody Coach…sounds a bit heroic…because it is! J
SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR X-GAINS AND MY FREE ADVICE?
Absolutely nothing…except one thing!!!
SAME OL’ SAME OL’
I will continue to give my 110% honest opinion.
I WILL ALSO CONTINUE TO GIVE 110% FREE ADVICE, CUSTOM WORKOUT PROGRAMS, AND MEAL PLANS.
I can continue business as normal because I will be recommending the same Beachbody Products I did before I became a coach. And, when a Beachbody Product isn’t the right fit, I’ll do what I do now – continue making free custom workout and meal plans for each and every individual reader that needs one.
THE ONE THING
Instead of filling in for Bad/Bum Beachbody Coaches, I will now be able to be my reader’s Official Beachbody Coach and make sure everyone directed to a Beachbody Product via X-Gains receives the full Beachbody Journey as it is meant to be – a journey that literally changed my life.
